Don’t Eat Junk, Go Low Carb!

MMMMMMMM – Good…potato chips, Twinkies, cupcakes, oreos, fudge bars, candy & cupcakes.  Again, mmmmmmm – good!  Although extremely mouth-watering by all means, none of the above fall into the “low carb” sections of our daily diets.  Although your taste buds will love you forever, your body will not and will eventually suffer if these items are regulars on your personal diet.  Low-carb is the way to go.

You can, however, treat your taste buds to enjoyable delights on a regular basis without creeping into the high caloric and carbohydrate waters.  There are plenty of low carb options out there that will satisfy your hunger, but won’t hurt your health or physique.  It’s a matter of commitment and will power on your part.   Providing your kids with healthy low-carb snacks at an early age only helps them lead a healthy lifestyle.

Ideally, low carb snacks will have mostly “healthy” fat, fiber & plenty of protein.  They’ll have very little unhealthy fat and sugars.  Here’s a rundown of some another options for low-carb snacks that you can and should consider over chips, candy, and snack cakes.

–  Apple Slices

– Raw almonds, pecans, and other nuts

– Pickles (Be careful with the sodium intake)

– Carrots

– Certain cheeses like string cheese

– Broccoli

– Hard Boiled Eggs

– Beef or Turkey Jerky

– Sunflower Seeds

– Low-Fat Yogurt

–  Sugar-Free Jello

For those that just can’t shake their need for sweets and or high carb snack items, there are plenty of low-cal/carb mixes and products out there.   Our favorite low-carb cookie mix is a peanut butter cookie treat that is awesome.   Simply because, peanut butter is already an example of low-carb snack and chocolate chip cookies’ sugar content is balanced out with the help of the eggs and butter (light) mix.

When the going gets tough between meals and you just have to have a snack, steer clear of the potato chips & sweets and go with something healthy instead.  There are plenty of great tasting alternatives to the “junk” that still tastes great.  Your body will appreciate the intake of “clean” and low-carb foods in the long run vs. the intake of fat filled & high caloric junk food.
